Tips for leaving a difficult marriage

On Behalf of | Jan 26, 2021 | divorce | 0 comments

Leaving a bad marriage can be very difficult even when you are unhappy in that relationship. You might be worried about finances or your children, or you simply could be in an unhealthy emotional dynamic that makes you question your own decisions. If you do decide to leave a marriage that has gone bad in Kentucky, the tips below can help.

Understanding your situation

You should not feel bad about yourself or the fact that you have not been able to extricate yourself so far. In some relationships, one person is very manipulative, making it hard to leave. You may even assume that you are the problem. Many people do not tell anyone about the problems in their marriage, and this can lead you to feel isolated. Finding a trusted family member or friend to talk to can be the first step.

How to leave

Although it is not always possible, it is best to have a plan in place rather than leaving haphazardly. If you do not work outside the home, you may want to get a job first so that you have some financial independence. You may also want to seek help with a counselor, therapist or support group. After you leave, you may need to cut off any communication with the other person that is not about your children. You should also take the time to heal and do things that you enjoy as you head into the divorce process.

Divorce is usually difficult even when it is relatively amicable, but you can work with an attorney who may be helpful whether you are negotiating an agreement outside of court or going into litigation. An attorney may be able to help you in getting the child custody agreement that you want as well as the financial arrangements that you need.
