Is my marriage headed for a divorce?

You and your spouse met in elementary school. You grew up together, sharing special milestones such as your prom and graduation. The two of you got married when you were fresh out of high school, and soon, you started a family, You thought you’d be together forever, but lately, things have been strained between the two of you. You don’t want to admit it, but you think your marriage might be in trouble.

Admitting that a divorce may be inevitable is not easy, but it is important to be honest with yourself. When was the last time that you felt close to your spouse? What is getting in the way of that feeling?

Signs that divorce may be on the horizon

These are some of the signs that your marriage may be headed for divorce:

  • You haven’t been happy for a long time.

  • A drug, alcohol, or gambling addiction is damaging your once-strong bond.

  • The two of you are no longer intimate.
  • Financial problems are causing you to drift apart.
  • You married when you were very young and the relationship has run its course.
  • The relationship has become mentally, emotionally, or physically abusive.

Admitting that you are experiencing any of the above issues in your marriage is difficult. Yet, it is important to be honest with yourself. In some cases, making the decision to file for divorce becomes a matter of self-preservation.
